If you mean chickens as such, then events, tournaments, advanced quests, and daily logins. And the shop, naturally.
If you mean chicken in the form of food champions, I do it by levelling up any Incubus (Uncommon Deamonspawn) I get. It takes time and energy, but I find it quite effective, and I always see where my food is, preventing accidental sacrifice of some champion I wanted to keep. Incubus drops in 12.6, which is the stage I farm due to higher XP gain than in 12.3, allowing me to replenish my Incubus ranks for free.
Getting *4 food champions is not that hard:
10 runs in 12.6 get three *2 champions to level 20, 23 runs in 12.6 get three *3 champions to level 30.
The really tedious grind starts after that, since to rank up a champion to *6, you need 5 food champions/chickens at *4.
To rank up my champions ot *6, I prefer to buy a *5 chicken pack from time to time, then using 2 *5 chickens and 3 food champions at *5. I find it the most effective way for me.

12.3 is most optimal. The silver diffference > xp difference compared to 12.6
