I just finished first in my group and was due 6x chests, I claimed the reward and nothing happened. 

Restarted the game and waited a bit and still zilch.. Is this normal?

Are you sure you didn't receive the gear? It won't show you anything when you click claim reward, but you should still have the gear pieces in your inventory after that. Try searching with the filter on new items.
