Im gonna skip 1st SR and see how bad the path is.  Leaning more towards skip though.

That's the smart plan, no reason to fold when u can check.  Make the decision at the path.

Is there a reason not to get this champ? Like, are you actually short on ... any of the relevant resources?

I am short on the most important resource: My Raid Mojo is at an all time low. Not embracing the grind may possibly replenish it.

I burned through too much for Fabian in terms of Champ Training and Summons. Especially with the Path event. This champ wouldn't replace anyone on my 3 hydra teams or my Chimera team, they also aren't great for PVP. So I don't see the point when I can stockpile for a more useful fusion later.

I could easily do the fusion. Now though there is usually a second (fusion)* to get a soul. So I see fusions as twice as expensive as they used to be. Instead of wasting resources on another fusion that I will probably never even level I can just hoard resources and complete a decent fusion and soul event, or some other guaranteed event that I as more worthy of the investment.

I mean sure, but just don't get the soul if the champ is useless. At least it's half a faction guardian.

A few things. One, this is a fusion worth doing IF it's a champion that will benefit your account. Just for a lot of us, it isn't gonna help anywhere except maybe FW Hard.

Two, skipping the Soul is usually a really bad idea. They have added so many leggos to the game, there are a minimum of 300 leggos now. Pulling a 5 star soul is a statistical nightmare for a specific champion and since it's a non-critical champion, you aren't gonna wanna waste the essences. 5 Star soul I believe is worth more than +3 empowering (minus the spd increase).

Also about the Soul, they don't always do it where you can get the Ranks 2-5 of the Soul in progression. Sometimes the only option is a 5 star or nothing with the Soul Event. 

Finally, there is no *reasonable* way to get a Fusion done without doing Champ Chase or Summon Rush. Yes, you can take 1st or 2nd place in a tourney for fragments OR you can get lucky and pull a epic but the epic is Void so that isn't likely. Why would you want to do all that for a "half faction guardian" when you can save all those shards for a 2x event?

If you want to go for the fusion, whether as a completionist or you need the champ, then do it. No one is saying you shouldn't. They're just saying that THEY aren't doing it, you can do you however you want.
