If i upgrade gear through the 10x upgrade button my screen goes dark and bright every cycle.

this is very wierd and have naver seen any other app do this.

anyone? any ideas?

It's not a "bug". They send requests to the server on most player actions, including gear upgrade attempt. So the screen going dark is a "loading" or "uh, wait, still working on it" screen. I guess they wanted to improve the feedback with the player, like if server is not reachable, we'll see the spinning wheel. But they only managed to downgrade the player's experience.
