Bastion defense during upgrade
Any thoughts on how to calculate troops needed to guard a bastion during an upgrade? Any suggestions on troop numbers and kinds?

Upgrade gets disrupted if your Bastion gets attacked and you lose. If you're not upgrading and the same happens, your Bastion gets downgraded. So, I see no difference between defending during an upgrade and just defending (unless it's at level 5, in which case it cannot get downgraded, so you don't have to defend at all).
As to "how to defend", the answer is "the best that you can". Whatever defence you pour in, you can get hit harder, especially if several BHs team up against you (which happened to my BH in the last days of Kabam... and they failed, btw). A reasonable minimum would depend on the map you're playing or, more precisely, on the strength of your enemies.
If you're a small(ish) player, only interested in reaching level 5, I suggest rubying up to that level and not wasting units at all.

Keep on Millstone Level 5, with NO TROOPS ( you don't give any points away ) and no big Fish can profit from You. Until you get 160 good players then you can go out being a Very Bad Pirate, who ever one will want to Hunt Down.

As stated by crowbar using rubies is really the best way to get to level 5. About 5 - 6k rubies should get you there. Even if you need to buy stones but you also need to boost the upgrade immediately after starting. Once you get to level 5 though you don't need to defend at all. This gives you time to build your BH defense up. Then you need to get about 40 million in defense to ensure your level 6 bastion can take hits. But you need to keep filling your bastion with defense. You never can have too much defense.Also before sending in defense get your knowledge to level 6 before doing the upgrade. The reason to get to level 6 ensures that afte and don't need to you upgrade to level 6 you already have your knowledge at level 6 after the upgrade. Each level of knowledge increases stats by 1% ie level 1 !% level 2 2% and so on. They need to go in order though depending on its offense or defense. I suggest defense first though. For instance the order is pirates, mercs, fleet then armada. Each upgrade though costs codexes. While stones are used to upgrade the bastion.

i'd suggest the bulk to be fleet and armada. Just remember not to use offense. Offense doesn't defend against offense
