How does scoring work on CPC?

I’m confused, the score in the top display by the ‘how many mechs are in play’ bit.

Coming to endgame, I and another on my team, and one on opposing team are all that’s left.

Opposition player is retreating to their initial spawn point, we are walking up on them taking CPs on the way.

Our score is static, theirs is climbing. Before we get to then theirs hits a 100 and it’s game over before the clock runs out.

How’s that work then? I don’t get it?

Whoever has occupied the most control points for the longest with 100 being the goal. It's time based, not kills. You have to fully capture one before the timer score starts accumulating. You can win by killing all opposition mechs before either team reaches 100 but typically not a good strategy against real players.
