You could try reading some comics.
How about the King telling him how to build the farm or the the mine or the quarry and the lumber yard.go searching for treasure, or if thats too tame.
Tell him his hero is too weak and he needs to go an fight invaders to get things for the forge.
I am probably too old to give you good suggestions.
