the new castle guards are permanent once you have purchased them, as old inmortals, red dragons, hydras, crusaders....

you can find them on construction panel, improvements tab

The price of the phoenix scared me off somehow. 

Definitely true from my experience: Phoenix has significant side benefits beyond the defense power points, every player deserves one

Hello, I had some trouble with Phoenix also and Im not sure if I understand you well... I had 5 guards, immortals. I heard about Phoenix quest, so I build it (I havnt nagas or cerbers). And I didnt recive quest. Did I just broke it? Or I must wait month to get it? Not long ago, about 2 days (but after I build Phoenix) I recive quest to upgrade castle tower, it was time mission, I did it and havnt get more time quest

if you received the quest and u purchased the phoenix then you should receive ur reward and the quest will not appear anymore as the moment you only can have 1 phoenix and it will disappear from black market

if you purchased the phoenix with no quest, then this one will not appear cause you already have one, so im afraid this will be lost forever.

Yes, now I understand, thank you. Anyway I find it very stupid to have hidden quest, which can be destroeyd, because it didnt show up because... what? I should bought different guards first (on which I also dont have quest?) It dont have matter for me anymore, but it may help someone in future...

If you hasn't one type of Castle Guards the quest will come to build that unit - this kind of quest is coming  monthly and is last just for 48hrs. In the moment you have build at least one unit from all Castle Guards you will receive the quest to build a Phoenix automatically accomplished with reward of 90 dragons.
